{"id":7860,"date":"2016-06-14T11:54:11","date_gmt":"2016-06-14T09:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.synthesis.co.za\/?p=607"},"modified":"2016-06-14T11:54:11","modified_gmt":"2016-06-14T09:54:11","slug":"saving-day-starting-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.synthesis.co.za\/saving-day-starting-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving the day by starting today"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>Parkinson\u2019s triviality principle:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>It was 1957, all the right people were gathered in a committee, they had one job, approve design for a nuclear power plant. \u00a0So they did what every man in their situation would do, they scheduled a meeting. \u00a0As with all meetings, it was very productive, everyone agreed, no-one spoke out of turn, everyone stayed on topic, important decisions were made and they were all out of there early enough to miss the lunch queue.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, instead of discussing the nuclear power plant, these guys devoted most of their time to the plant\u2019s bike shed. \u00a0Yes, a bike shed. \u00a0Apparently the two could be easily confused. \u00a0Also, designing a bike shed was way easier and less things could blow up. \u00a0Parkinson, the observer of this predicament, noticed that they spent their time working on a trivial problem, why, because it could be easily understood and visualized in the mind. \u00a0I\u2019m sure you recognize this predicament in your environment, it\u2019s when you step out of a meeting and get the feeling, we\u2019ve missed the target. \u00a0Zero value was added.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predicament number 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u00a0Digress into solving the trivial leaving the actual complex issue unexamined.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Pareto\u2019s 80\/20 principle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Entrepreneurs, engineers and anyone involved in delivering software, see the world as a problem to be solved. \u00a0We can hardly order a burger without identifying the choke point. \u00a0Over the years, I\u2019ve learned that this is a bad strategy for marriage.\u00a0Don\u2019t see your wife as a problem to be solved. \u00a0And how do we engineer types solve problems? \u00a0By creating a list of-course. \u00a0We simply can\u2019t relax until we\u2019ve listed all the what-if\u2019s. \u00a0Are we certain we\u2019ve thought of all the possible catastrophes? \u00a0Earthquake, check, rapture, check. \u00a0Is that everything that could possibly go wrong?! \u00a0Great, now I can finally get a good night&#8217;s rest.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the principle, Vilfredo Pareto, an Italian economist, observed that 80% of the land was owned by 20% of the population. \u00a0Translated into software, 80% of the value is resides in 20% of the scope. \u00a0Which means the majority of what-if\u2019s isn\u2019t worth our concern. \u00a0That is definitely my experience, we usually don\u2019t have to deliver all the what-if\u2019s, hitting the base case covers most of the ground. \u00a0Besides, what-ifs are negative, demotive and results in burdening everyone with everything that could go wrong rather than focusing on adding value.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predicament number 2:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Defocused by large percentage of what-if\u2019s<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve come to realise that these two predicaments are related. \u00a0We are lured into solving the trivial because it is easy to grasp the what-ifs. \u00a0So what is the solution to our double predicament? \u00a0How do we focus on the complex, how do we get to solving the hard problems.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Just Start<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just start. \u00a0Yes, it\u2019s that simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The key here is defining start:\u00a0In engineering you have distinct phases; analysis, design, development, testing. Start usually means design has been completed, you will now start development.\u00a0Not so in software, in software, you analyze while you develop. And if that\u2019s not screwed up enough. You also start with the test, deliver before you\u2019re completely done and obtain requirements even after you\u2019ve released. The lines are blurred, if they even exist at all. So what do we mean by start in software development. \u00a0I\u2019ll tell you what it shouldn\u2019t be: \u00a0Something you do, after you\u2019ve gained certainty. \u00a0In engineering you draw up plans to gain certainty before you start. \u00a0You need to be certain about the distance between the cliffs before you start building the bridge. \u00a0Besides, the cliffs don\u2019t move while you plan like they do in software. \u00a0In software, the process of starting, of delivery, is a way, if not the best way, to gain certainty. \u00a0Development, is analysis, writing tests, is analysis, building front-ends, is analysis.<\/p>\n<p>If we digress into solving the trivial, maybe we\u2019re solving in the wrong arena. \u00a0The correct arena for solving the complex is at the salt mines, doing the actual work. With the added bonus that while you\u2019re gaining certainty, you&#8217;re delivering. \u00a0In my experience, you gain certainty in the trenches, not before. \u00a0So get out of the meeting room, embrace uncertainty, and just start!<\/p>\n<h2><b>Let\u2019s get practical<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow me to share one aid that helps us to just start.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story map. \u00a0We use a story map to prioritize the two dimensional backlog. \u00a0Our main themes are listed in the top row with detail stories vertically arranged underneath. \u00a0We draw a line and move important stories above the line, this forms our minimum viable product, or walking skeleton. \u00a0We have this map with us at every grooming and sprint planning. \u00a0For us, it does a few things:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps us to identify the 20% value items.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a way to stop what-if\u2019s from defocusing us. \u00a0As soon as someone brings up a what-if, we write it down, stick it below a line and move on. \u00a0This way no one gets hurt and we retain our momentum.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure out what is the best and fastest way your team gains certainty, and make that your start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let&#8217;s embrace uncertainty, take action and let\u2019s solve the hard problems in the correct arena. \u00a0I close with a quote from J.F.
